About Carrickfergus in Bloom

marine highwayThere are many reasons why we feel proud of Carrickfergus Borough - one of them is the abundance of flowers and attractive horticultural displays. Each summer the borough is brightened up by hundreds of hanging baskets, bedding displays, shrub beds and trees. Carrickfergus Borough Council developed the Carrickfergus in Bloom initiative to brighten up the Borough, to become a ‘Borough of Flowers’. The objective is to make a brighter Borough for the benefit of all citizens and visitors.

The primary aims of the initiative are:
primary aims To make Carrickfergus a more pleasant place in which to work, live and visit.
primary aims To stimulate self-pride and hence care of the environment by the residents of the Borough.
primary aims Create opportunities for involvement particularly at Community level in the initiative.

The Translink ‘Ulster in Bloom’ competition is a province-wide campaign organised by NILGA. Its aim is to promote tourism by encouraging local people to make their cities, towns and villages as attractive as possible by the imaginative and decorative use of flowers. Carrickfergus in Bloom is part of this competition. Everyone can play a role in the enhancement of the town and the improvement of Carrickfergus as a centre to live, work in and visit. Our Borough has won Translink ‘Ulster in Bloom’ and 'Britain in Bloom' many times Click Here for a list of our awards. The Carrickfergus in Bloom initiative incorporates the towns of Carrickfergus, Whitehead, Greenisland and Eden.

Carrickfergus in Bloom is managed by the Parks, Countryside & Amenities Sub-Committee which reports to Council once a month. The sub-committee is Chaired by Alderman May Beattie other elected members include Alderman David Hilditch, Alderman William Ashe, Councilor Isobel Day, Councilor Darren Ferguson and Councilor Louise Marsden. The day to day running of Carrickfergus in Bloom is carried out by the Council's Parks & Countryside Development Officer, Stephen Daye.
