Carrickfergus in Bloom

Beach Road Nature Reserve

The first phase of the Beach Road Nature Reserve has now been completed and the area has been transformed. The site is located at the end of Beach Road in Whitehead, which effectively represents the most southerly aspect to the town. Much of the site is an old disused limestone quarry which has been worked since before 1769. Around 1868 the quarry provided much of the stone used for the construction of the Belfast to Larne Railway Line which skirts the coastline to form the eastern boundary of the site. The quarry closed in the 1920's and from 1955 to 1982 the area was used as the town waste disposal site. Brighter Whitehead secured funding from Better Belfast to carry out this work. You can now visit the Beach Road Nature Reserve website and download the site leaflet.

Project Aim

The land is currently not used for anything at present. However, it will provide a fantastic amenity for both wildlife and the local population when the work is completed. It is proposed to create on the site a Local Nature Reserve that will be managed by Carrickfergus Borough Council under Article 22 of The Nature Conservation and Amenity Lands (NI) Order 1985.

The work will include:

planting 2,000 native species trees;
installation of a management gate into the wildlife area;
providing information/education boards,
promotional leaflet
and dedicated website (www.beachroad.org.uk);
creating a wild flower meadow;
providing additional and renewed paths;
providing an improved surface to the car park & flower beds;
installation of three picnic tables and three litter bins
providing a central stone art feature

Please return soon as more information will follow shortly.
